We offer both pre emergence and post emergence herbicides over the growing season. Herbicide regulation is continuously changing, but most of the pre-emerge herbicides that we include in the herbicide programme contain pendimethalin which controls annual grasses and broadleaved weeds by inhibiting cell division and elongation i.e. Wing-P, Stomp Aqua and Anthem.

Under Film:

  • Maize crops that are sown under film typically receive a pre emergence herbicide at the time of sowing but a follow up post emergence spray  may be needed if weeds persist.

Open sown crops:

  • Only receive a post emergence spray at the 5-6 leaf stage once the maize and weeds have become established. Contact sprays are becoming more frequent due to the environmental dangers being linked to herbicides that have a residual mode of action.

Foliar sprays

Nutrient deficiencies in maize often present with a distinct colouring on the leaf during the growing season and this can have an impact on grain fill when pollination has occurred. Please view page 16/17 of our growers guide on the home page for more information.

For this reason, we supply foliar sprays (liquid N,P,K with trace elements) that are suitable for mixing with herbicides, thus causing less damage to the crop and reduced work for the farmer (single spray).

For the reasons above, it is vital for the agronomists at Shines Agri to walk your crop, provide the correct sprays if needed and to maintain contact with you, the farmer.
